Artist long caption | As the human brain has evolved to seek patterns in the world, in order to try and predict what's going to happen next, we tend to have faith that a pattern is going to continue in the same vein. However, as the gambler's fallacy tells us, past events are no guarantee of what will happen next, and a pattern can mutate; there can be future disruptions, transgressions and deviations. Faith has a tiling pattern on the left-hand side of the painting, and the same pattern, but transposed, on the right-hand side. It's like there's a bass drum beat on the left, and a snare drum backbeat on the right. And in the middle of the painting there are somewhat random shifts between these two states. A consequence of these fluctuations are the suggested shifting oblique lines that appear to dance in that central area. Although, across the painting, the triangle and rhombus elements of the pattern progressively change their orientations, the circles remain consistently anchored, always in the same position relative to each other.
